About the exhibition

The Lurid Beauty of Monsters turned the book The Art of Tim Burton into fourteen galleries you could walk through.

Published in 2009, The Art of Tim Burton collects forty years of the artist’s film concepts, book ideas, unrealised projects and personal artworks across hundreds of illustrations. It was edited by Derek Frey, Leah Gallo and Holly C. Kempf, with text by Gallo and design by Kempf.

Marking ten years since its publication, the exhibition transformed the book’s introduction and thirteen chapters into fourteen distinct galleries, an expanded physical version of the book. Its immersive, interactive rooms drew on Burton’s cinematic inclinations, from pre-film animation devices and 1950s and ’60s science fiction B-movies to the 3D technology he used in Alice in Wonderland, while bringing his drawings, paintings and photography to life.

Organised by independent curator Jenny He in collaboration with Tim Burton Productions, and presented in Brazil by Rua 34 Productions.
